BANTEAY SREI
The next in line was this quaint little temple - BANTEAY SREI - around 20 kms north of Angkor. Reminded me of Mukteshwar temple in Bhubaneswar - both in its size and the intricate carvings. Figures of Hindu gods, goddesses and from Hindu mythology fills this dainty edifice. One stares and ponders - Am I in India or in far away Cambodia?! Who took the entire book of mythology and erected it there? What does the history books have to say about this? Visit to other places had never tickled my grey as much as these temples did. Am still awestruck and trying to read and explore.
Built in 10th century and consecrated on 22 Apr 967 during the reign of Rajendravarman.
A few steps closer to the main gateway to this little beauty on the foot of the Kulen mountains. The name translates to 'Citadel of the Women' or 'Citadel of Beauty'. And, from the archives the actual name is 'TRIBHUVANAMAHESHVARA' or 'Great Lord of Threefold World'.

The additional piece of sandstone atop the lintel. The rectangular cuts on the top of this piece had wooden beams resting on it. These beams formed the roof of the courtyards between each enclosure.
